Medal of Honor Recipient

Nicholas J. Cutinha was born in Fernandina Beach on January 13, 1945. He spent his childhood in Nassau County, where he attended schools in Yulee before entering into the armed services on March 1, 1967. He completed his basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. In September of 1967, he joined the war in Vietnam. On a combat mission near Gia Ding, Republic of Vietnam, on March 2, 1968, Cutinha displayed courageous action during an ambush by a large communist force. This attack became one of the worst single encounter loss of life incidents in the history of the Vietnam War. Cutinha provided machine gun coverage for his company, allowing for the evacuation of wounded soldiers and saving the lives of at least nine members of his unit prior to being mortally wounded by enemy forces. He was 23 years old. On April 7, 1970, he was posthumously awarded with the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery and valor, the only Nassau County native so honored. The Medal of Honor is our country’s highest award for personal valor that goes above and beyond the call of duty in action against an enemy force. Cutinha was laid to rest in the Fort Denaud Cemetery in Denaud, Florida.  Click Here to continue reading.

Veteran Biographies

We believe, it is important to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives and served our country with so much bravery.  Without them, we would not have the freedom we enjoy in the United States of America or our precious right to vote.  Our hope is that each family will take time to read the biographies on our website to both honor and remember these brave men and women who have given so much.
